Extended predictions beyond 500 yards are modeled from the same G1 engine — useful for initial DOPE, but outside the 500-yard manufacturer-table validation audit. Confirm with observed DOPE, especially near transonic.
A retained-energy reference only — not a shoot/don't-shoot distance. Real effective range depends on your accuracy, shot placement, bullet construction, and conditions. The ~1,000 ft-lb (deer-sized) and ~1,500 ft-lb (elk-sized) figures are commonly cited rules of thumb, not standards.

The 7mm RUM is known as one of the fastest commercially loaded 7mm cartridges, pushing a 160-grain bullet past 3,200 fps and delivering flat trajectories and heavy downrange energy that suit elk, deer, and other big game taken at extended distances. That performance comes at a cost: recoil is stout enough that many shooters run a muzzle brake, the large powder charge burns barrel throats faster than milder 7mms, and factory ammunition is comparatively expensive and less widely stocked. It shares the sharp trajectory advantage of the 7mm bore while offering more velocity and reach than the 7mm Remington Magnum. In practice it appeals mostly to hunters who prioritize long-range capability and are willing to accept the recoil, cost, and shorter barrel life that come with it.
Remington introduced the 7mm Remington Ultra Magnum in 2001, two years after launching the .300 RUM from which it was derived by necking the case down to hold 7mm bullets. The RUM family uses a beltless case based on a modified .404 Jeffery rimless design, giving it a large-capacity powder column and a rebated rim. Remington created it to be a flat-shooting, high-velocity 7mm built for open-country and long-range hunting, positioned above the established 7mm Remington Magnum.
