No. CaliberAtlas is strictly an educational reference platform. We do not sell, promote, or facilitate the sale of firearms, ammunition, or any weapons. We do not connect buyers with sellers. Our purpose is to provide accurate ballistic data and educational content to help users make informed decisions and understand ballistic science.
Yes, all content on CaliberAtlas is free to access. We support the platform through advertising (Google AdSense) displayed on our pages. We believe that ballistic education should be accessible to everyone, which is why we don't charge for our reference data, calculators, or educational content.
CaliberAtlas uses manufacturer-published load and trajectory figures, SAAMI and C.I.P. standards where applicable, and standard published G1/G7 drag references. Cartridge pages identify their representative load and calculation provenance. The trajectory engine has a separate public accuracy audit against manufacturer tables. Source coverage varies by record, so use the listed sources and current manufacturer data for critical decisions.
We strive for maximum accuracy, but users should understand that published ballistic data represents typical performance under controlled test conditions. Real-world performance varies based on barrel length, environmental conditions (temperature, altitude, humidity), ammunition lot variations, and individual firearm characteristics. Our data should be used as a reference starting point—always verify with current manufacturer specifications for critical decisions and confirm performance with your specific equipment.
Records are updated when supported corrections, source revisions, or new data are reviewed; CaliberAtlas does not promise a fixed review interval for every cartridge. If something appears incorrect or outdated, use the Contact page and include the cartridge, disputed value, and a current primary source so the report can be checked.
We welcome corrections. Please visit the Contact page and provide the cartridge name, the disputed data point, the value you believe is correct, and a primary source such as a manufacturer data sheet or standards document. We review the evidence before changing a published record; a submission does not automatically replace the existing value.
Our ballistic calculator uses standard G1 and G7 drag models and accounts for inputs including temperature, altitude, humidity, pressure, wind speed and angle, shooting angle, and a simplified spin-drift estimate when twist rate and bullet diameter are supplied. The public calculator does not currently expose the latitude and firing-direction inputs needed for a Coriolis correction. Results are theoretical estimates; real-world performance varies with the firearm, ammunition, conditions, and factors outside the model. Always confirm with actual shooting at your intended distances.
G1 and G7 refer to different drag models based on bullet shape. G1 is based on a flat-base bullet profile and is the most commonly published BC for hunting ammunition—it's useful for comparisons but may not accurately predict trajectory at long range. G7 is based on a boat-tail bullet profile and more accurately represents modern long-range projectiles. When comparing calibers, use the same BC standard (both G1 or both G7) for accurate comparisons. Our Education Center has a detailed section explaining these concepts.
People often search for an 'ethical hunting range' for a cartridge, but a single distance isn't something we publish — it depends on your accuracy, shot placement, bullet construction, and conditions, none of which live in a database. For profiles with an explicit hunting or big-game listed use, we show a Hunting Energy Reference read directly from that cartridge's trajectory table: where the load still retains commonly cited big-game energy figures (~1,000 ft-lb for deer-sized game, ~1,500 ft-lb for elk-sized). Other profiles show context aligned with their listed uses instead. Treat the figures as rules of thumb, not standards, and one input among several — your personal effective range may be well short of what the energy allows.
A hunting setup depends on local regulations, the specific game and shot, bullet construction, the firearm and load, and the shooter's demonstrated accuracy. CaliberAtlas can compare measured and modeled ballistic values, but it cannot determine a personal ethical range or provide individualized purchasing advice. Use the hunting guide as a decision framework, then verify current load data and legal requirements and confirm performance at the range.
CaliberAtlas provides educational content about firearms safety principles, including the four universal safety rules and safe handling practices. However, reading about safety is not a substitute for hands-on professional instruction. We strongly encourage all firearms owners to take a certified firearms safety course from a qualified instructor. Our Education Center covers safety fundamentals, but please seek in-person training for practical skills development.
You can compare up to four calibers at once using our comparison feature. From the Browse page, add caliber cards to your comparison list. Once you have two or more selected, choose 'Compare Selected' to open the detailed side-by-side comparison, including velocity, energy, trajectory, and listed-use energy context. Big-game retained-energy references appear only for profiles with an explicit hunting or big-game listed use.
Yes! You can create a free account (email or Google sign-in) to save your range cards, favorite calibers, and range log entries. Without an account, your preferences and calculator profiles are stored locally in your browser but won't sync across devices.
