The 8x68S is best known as a hard-hitting, flat-shooting European big-game round that squeezes magnum ballistics into a standard-length action, and it retains a loyal following among Continental hunters. Firing 0.323-inch (8mm) bullets at high velocity, it delivers considerably more energy and reach than the classic 8x57 Mauser, making it well suited to European big game such as red deer, wild boar, and chamois. Its strengths are downrange energy and a relatively flat trajectory; the trade-offs are stout recoil and a large powder charge relative to its bore. Because factory support is thin and the cartridge is uncommon in the U.S. market, it is largely a niche choice today, popular with handloaders. In its home market, however, it endures as a respected all-around cartridge.
The 8x68S is a German magnum rifle cartridge developed in the 1930s by gunsmith August Schuler of Suhl, Germany, and introduced commercially by the ammunition maker RWS in the spring of 1939. It was designed as a beltless, rimless magnum with a slightly rebated rim so that it would fit and function through standard-length Mauser 98 bolt actions, giving hunters magnum performance without requiring a longer, more expensive magnum-length receiver. The cartridge remains a distinctly European design that never gained a real foothold in North America, and factory ammunition and rifles are produced almost entirely by European makers.
