The 7.62×51mm NATO is a full-power rifle cartridge prized for its reach, penetration, and terminal authority well beyond intermediate rounds. It is best known today for precision and support roles: sniper rifles, designated-marksman rifles, and belt-fed machine guns where its energy and long-range consistency matter more than a soldier's ammunition load. On the commercial side, its .308 Winchester twin is one of the most widely available and trusted hunting cartridges in the world, capable on deer, elk, hog, and similar big game while feeding a huge range of rifles and factory loads. The trade-off is sharper recoil and heavier ammunition than lighter modern cartridges, which is why militaries moved to 5.56 for general infantry use. Chambered in everything from bolt guns to the AR-10 platform and legacy battle rifles, it remains a benchmark for accuracy, versatility, and dependable performance out past several hundred yards.
The 7.62×51mm NATO grew out of the U.S. Army's post-WWII "light rifle" program, which developed the T65 experimental cartridge series from the shorter .300 Savage case to match .30-06 performance in a more compact package. NATO standardized the final T65E5 iteration as the 7.62×51mm in 1954, and it entered U.S. service with the M14 rifle and M60 machine gun. Winchester had already released the design commercially as the .308 Winchester in 1952, and the two cartridges remain dimensionally nearly identical, differing mainly in military brass and pressure conventions. Though the 5.56×45mm NATO displaced it as the standard infantry round, the 7.62 NATO endures worldwide in battle rifles like the FN FAL and H&K G3, machine guns such as the M240, and countless sniper and designated-marksman systems.
