Overview

The .375 Weatherby Magnum is a dangerous-game cartridge that wrings modestly more velocity from the classic .375-caliber belted case, delivering flatter trajectory and greater retained energy than the .375 H&H while feeding through the same standard-length magnum actions. Driving 300-grain bullets around 2,800 fps for well over 5,000 ft-lb at the muzzle, it carries the authority expected for heavy African and other large, thick-skinned game, and its extra reach makes it somewhat more versatile on plains game at distance. Heavy recoil and the practical limits of factory ammunition availability keep it a specialist's choice rather than a mainstream option. In practice its performance advantage over the ubiquitous .375 H&H is real but incremental, which is why the H&H's worldwide ammunition support has left the Weatherby version comparatively uncommon. Owners generally value it as a hard-hitting, flat-shooting alternative within the Weatherby line for hunters who want a proven .375 with a bit more velocity.

History

Roy Weatherby developed the .375 Weatherby Magnum in the mid-1940s (designed in 1944, in production by 1945) as one of his earlier magnum designs, formed by fire-forming the .375 H&H Magnum case to Weatherby's signature minimal-body-taper, double-radius shoulder profile. The reshaping increased powder capacity to push a standard belted case a couple hundred feet per second faster than the parent H&H at equal bullet weight. It was a proprietary Weatherby chambering rather than a wildcat, with cases and loaded ammunition eventually supplied through Norma. It was the forerunner to Weatherby's far larger .378 Weatherby Magnum, introduced in the following decade.
