Overview

The .223 Remington is prized for flat trajectory, mild recoil, and modest report, which make it easy to shoot accurately and inexpensive to feed. It is a mainstay for varmint and predator hunting, high-volume target and plinking sessions, and defensive and tactical use, and it feeds the enormously popular AR-15 platform. Bullet weights commonly run from light 40-grain varmint loads to heavier 62-77 grain projectiles that need faster rifling twists to stabilize, with a 1:8 twist offering a versatile middle ground. Its main limitations are limited energy on larger game and wind drift with lighter bullets at extended range, so it is best regarded as a varmint, small-to-medium game, and general-purpose cartridge rather than a big-game or true long-range round. Note that while .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO share external dimensions, 5.56 is loaded to higher pressure and should not be fired in rifles chambered only for .223.

History

The .223 Remington grew out of the U.S. military's late-1950s search for a small-caliber, high-velocity infantry cartridge, developed by Remington from the earlier .222 Remington case lengthened to hold more powder. Remington introduced it commercially in 1964, and it became the civilian counterpart to the military 5.56x45mm NATO round adopted for the M16 rifle. It has since become one of the most widely produced and chambered centerfire rifle cartridges in the world, standard in the AR-15 platform and countless bolt-action and semi-automatic rifles.
